Mental health. A topic so familiar yet silenced in our daily narrative. Often the minute a mental health issue is addressed in conversation or on a public forum, the tone of the discussion shifts. Sometimes this shift is positive, constructive and supportive but often times its the opposite.
At Iron North we have such a strong focus on your physical well being with our classes, workshops and more. Your mental health plays a huge role in your physical health (we all know this), but we never really have addressed it head on - honestly and without reservation. That is about to change.
We felt the need to open up the discussion to our community in and out of studio and to shed some light some of the stories and experiences from the mouths of our members and community. Why can't we talk about our deadlift PR and our anxiety? Why does one aspect of our health hold a stronger public stigma over the next? We want to start breaking down some of those barriers within the fitness industry and give our extended family the opportunity to discuss, address and seek help for the tricky parts of life.
So, here's what we're going to do. We want to bring questions and conversations about mental health (depression, abuse, anxiety, post partum, loss, you name it) to the forefront of our community, our blog posts, our social media accounts and to our network. No, we aren't going to start every strength class with a topic of discussion about "the top 5 ways to combat the winter blues", but we are going to gather stories from your peers for you to listen to, share, discuss and support (if you choose).
There is no health without mental health. In the next few weeks, you'll be officially introduced to our mental health initiative, what is means to us and its purpose. We are still ironing out those details but we are thrilled to be sharing it with you soon.
Let's end the stigma together.
